Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
