Each time a major honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
